Sarah Li Cain went from broke to six figures after hitting rock bottom and deciding to change her relationship with money. Sarah is willing to share that journey with us. She was quite intentional and set goals for her journey. Taking small baby steps and working her way forward.

Don't forget to check out Sarah's site highfivingdollars.com she has some great free resources for you.

About Sarah:  I’m Sarah, and I’m here to get you thinking about money not just in the dollar and cents sense (haha, get it?), but the psychology behind our spending behaviors.

You know you should save more, spend less and all that, but why aren’t you following some of the great advice out there? Or you know you should invest some of your heard earned money, but are too scared to even open an investment account?

It really boils down to how we feel about money. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true. If you’ve been taught that investment is meant to be confusing and you need to learn a lot of crazy technical jargon, then that belief is going to lead you to never spend a dime on any type of investment. Or if you’re stressed and trying to run away from certain problems, then that stress will mostly likely manifest in your spending habits.

I learned the hard way when I ended up jobless, homeless and $9,000 in credit card over an ex-boyfriend. Through that experience I learned that being kind to myself was key to living a richer life. Once I intertwined physical, mental and financial wellness together, I was able to grow my bank account and live a much more fulfilled life (just ask my husband and adorable son).

In the end, money is a tool. But we still attach feelings and beliefs towards money. So to figure out and better our financial situation, then we need to change those feelings and beliefs.

Today we are chatting with Jonathan Harris who left a corporate job to start a company with his wife and kids. https://hardlotion.com/

We will explore that journey along with how he helps parents find their kids talents. http://10ktotalent.com/

If you just want to hear the second part skip to 46:20 minute mark.

About Jonathan: As a homeschooling father with nine children in the home (my oldest child is currently 18 years old), I began to earnestly look for ways to make the standard educational time more productive and worthwhile. My fear was that we were going to spend so much time perfecting educational details and still wind up getting to where we really didn’t want to be. Instead I wanted to be able to give my children an inspiration to develop early in their life a focus and a drive to cultivating something that they would eventually be very, very good at, and maybe even something that they could use to provide for themselves with a generous living.

As a result, I started experimenting with dovetailing our standard study times as a means to push my children into a deeper understanding around one chosen topic of their interest. Then I tried other ideas that were equally as successful. Because of these home-grown experimentations in education, I am discovering some great techniques and ideas along the way that I want to share with other homeschooling parents. I am doing all of this so I can guide my children into a life-long passion early enough so they can avoid wandering aimlessly in their early twenties through unfocused college degrees or low-paying market skills. Passion, focus, discipline, creativity, productivity: Why not get all those good things for our children before the age of 18? That is what I intend to do and I hope you will follow me on this exciting journey.

Today we are going to talk to Mike Brown from Nitro about how to make college affordable regardless of how much money you have or don't have. Too often people don't put enough thought into the cost of college and the eventual payoff from the degree in terms of income.

Nitro just launched the promised NitroScore tool, which can be accessed here: https://score.nitrocollege.com.

This new student loan calculator is structured to do all of the legwork for parents and families, allowing them to find the best school that meets their personal financial needs, in a way never available before.

For the first time, students and their families can explore how picking one college or major over another may impact their ability to repay student loans. Backed by real-world college cost data and projected post-graduation salaries, NitroScore allows students and their families to compare schools, financial aid offers, and majors to identify their most affordable option. A big step in confronting the $1.3 trillion of student loan debt we face today.

Mike Brown is managing director for Nitro, a leading resource for student borrowers on all things FAFSA, scholarships, grants, and student loans. Brown is passionate about helping people manage their college payment decisions, having first served as a professor of mathematics at Pennsylvania State University, and with 15 years in development and marketing of education programs. He currently leads a team of professionals working to provide students, families, financial professionals and others with reliable resources on how to best tackle financing a higher education and manage student debt.

David Greer helped me to create the time and space needed to launch this podcast and juggle a few other priorities in a short period of time. Having someone to coach you and help you get stuff done is very important and we are going to learn why today.

About David Greer:

David joined Robelle Solutions Technology as the first employee after the founders. After joining Robelle, he got permission from his 4th year professors to take a week off so he could fly to an international conference to give his first ever technical presentation. During David’s tenure as co-owner and President of Robelle, he traveled the world giving a new presentation every year, creating multi-million-dollar product lines while building Robelle into one of the world’s leading provider of HP 3000 solutions.

Since successfully exiting Robelle, David has been an angel investor, director, and senior executive, always working 1-on-1 with entrepreneurs to define strategy, increase the value of the company in their markets, and defining formalized processes to drive outcomes. David now works directly with entrepreneurs to coach them to their next level of success or with entrepreneurs and their senior management teams to create high growth strategic results.

In his spare time, David enjoys the beauty, water, and mountains of the Vancouver area, while taking occasional adventure breaks with his wife, Karalee. David and Karalee are committed to their three children, spending time supporting them in the many and varied activities they are involved with, including skiing together as a family in Whistler, BC.

When not writing books, coaching, or speaking, you might find David hiking the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal or sailing across oceans.
